The United States' most influential musician, Beyonce, has weighed
into the fuming debate over a grand jury's decision not to indict police
officer Darren Wilson for the fatal shooting of Michael Brown.
Brown was shot and killed by Wilson in Ferguson, Missouri, in August and a jury decided on Monday that no charges should be brought against the policeman.
he ruling sparked outrage across the US and a protest in Ferguson descended into violence and chaos. A number of civil demonstrations took place in large cities across the country and the musicians decided to get involved.
Beyonce, who has at times been criticised for her passive approach to seething race issues in the United States, re-posted the Brown family's powerful statement to her Instagram account, which has more than 21 million followers. The measured but angry statement expressed "disappointment that the killer of our child will not face the consequence of his actions" but asked protesters to channel their frustration in ways that would make a positive change.
The statement read: "We need to work together to fix the system that allowed this to happen. Join with us in our campaign to ensure that every police officer working the streets in this country wears a body camera. We respectfully ask that you please keep your protests peaceful. Answering violence with violence is not the appropriate reaction. Let's not just make noise, let's make a difference. - The Brown Family.
