There was chaos at the Ojodu Undertaking office
of Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (IKEDC) located on Aina Street Ojodu,
Lagos Mainland, yesterday, Wednesday, June 20, when residents of the
community
stormed the office over the crazy bills served to them by the company.
The residents complained of over 100 percent
increment in the bill on a monthly basis without a commensurate increase in
electricity supply by the disco company.
It was gathered that community leaders who
considered the bills as exorbitant, took a decision that residents should
desist from paying bills unless discrepancy in the bill was rectified.
Commenting on the development, some of the
residents said the company had refused to listen to their complaints leading to
the protest.
“You can imagine from N5000 to 13,000 within a
month. This is unacceptable,” one resident said.
It is, however, unclear whether the move by the
residents would signal an end to the crazy bills.
Recall that the lawmaker representing Surulere
Federal Constituency in the House, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila recently sponsored a
bill against the estimated billing and metering by discos.
The bill which has passed second reading in the
House seeks to put an end to estimated billing method by power distribution
companies.
