Jordan Henderson has been confirmed as Steven Gerrard’s successor as Liverpool captain.
The
England midfielder was appointed as Gerrard’s vice-captain last season
and will now step into the role, after the latter joined LA Galaxy this
summer.
Henderson said: “I’m absolutely delighted and proud. It is
a great honour and a huge privilege to be named as the captain of this
football club.
“I’ll
look to give my best all of the time, put the team firmly first and try
to give them – or help them with – whatever they need from me.
“I’ve
learnt a lot off Stevie and how he conducted himself as the captain of
this club both on and off the field. You’ll always learn from top
players – and Steven was exactly that.”There were speculations that Brendan Rodgers might opt for James Milner,
who just completed a move to Anfield, but has been playing in the
Premier League for 13 years with Leeds, Aston Villa, Newcastle and
Manchester City.
